HELP REQUESTED

Can YOU spare a couple of hours or more a week to help Barbara Chapman ensure the contents of her 49 (and growing) albums containing information, photographs, and other ephemera relating to Leverstock Green's History, can be easily accessed? All that is required is a willingness to undertake the task and your own computer with Microsoft Office's Powerpoint.

Barbara has been researching Leverstock Green's history now for 25 years and has amassed a great deal of information on the village and its residents over time. Much of this is featured on her website, but she is continually building albums of press-cuttings, Village Newsletters and general ephemera. The latter albums currently number 49 and are growing constantly.

A number of years ago,  four local ladies spent many hours between them entering information from the items in the albums onto a Powerpoint spreadsheet which enables Barbara to find information easily when required or requested by others.  For example, only the other day Barbara was requested for any information concerning an Anne Mackey who had lived at Pancake House in the 1940s. Although the name wrang bells, Barbara couldn't remember why. Fortunately, this information was contained in the already entered items on the spreadsheet and she was able to locate it for the enquirer in a matter of minutes and let her know.

At the time of writing, there are 17 albums not yet entered in the spreadsheet, plus all the Press-cutting albums.

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO HELP - EVEN IF ONLY FOR ONE ALBUM -

THEN PLEASE CONTACT BARBARA.

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD HISTORY & MUSEUM SOCIETY

N.B. New Web URL:  http://historysochemel.bravesites.com/

WELCOME to our updated website for The Hemel Hempstead Local History & Museum Society.  We are a friendly group of people who are all interested in the local history of the area, and look forward to the day when Hemel can have its own local museum.

We welcome all ages from youngsters still at school to those at the other end of life’s scale.  All that is needed is an interest in our local history – our heritage.

Membership varies from those who have undertaken detailed research into various aspects of our local history, to  others who are simply interested in the past, and in particular in our own area.  Several of our members have published books on aspects of our local history, whereas others are content to read the fruits of their studies.

The society has one of the largest lending libraries of books covering all aspects of the history & archaeology of this part of Hertfordshire, and books are free on loan to members.

We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month, (excepting August & December) at the Carey Baptist Church Hall, Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead.

Each month we welcome a speaker. Topics covered are varied and the talk is usually accompanied by slides or other illustrative material. Sometimes the speaker will bring along a small selection of documentation or ephemera to share with us.

As well as the monthly talks, the society arranges occasional outings to places of interest.
